It’s amazing what you can do with paint, temporary wallpaper, furniture, rugs, and decor to give your apartment a full makeover.

Building a gallery wall with dozens of pictures, mirrors, and shadow boxes is a great way to utilize the space in your small apartment. Gallery walls can be the focal point to your room and by stacking high to the ceiling can actually give the illusion of a taller ceiling.
Finding a large enough piece of art to fill a wall can be expensive, and hard to hang without damage to a wall, so finding small inexpensive pieces can work to your advantage. Small family photos, random sized mirrors, and shelves can be a fun way to inject your personality and design into your space. Putting it in your front entry or in the living room can be a great talking piece as well when you have guests or family over.
Living in a studio apartment and want a way to separate your bedroom? Try hanging a curtain as your room divider! Or using an open shelf as a room divider. IKEA sells curtains up to one hundred and eighteen inches in length, which is perfectly suitable for apartments with standard nine-foot ceilings, as a room divider.
If you want it stationary, or temporary, try using 3M Command Strips to hang your curtain from, and simply tie back the sides if you want it open. Otherwise, if allowed, you can get tracks installed on the ceiling that would allow for the curtain to fully open from one end to the other.
There are some gorgeous sofas out there, and your couch can become the focal point of your apartment. Instead of getting a basic beige or grey couch, buy one in a gorgeous accent color like yellow or blue to accentuate the space! As far as decor, some of the trends we see popping up this year include tapestries, garlands, neon lights, bold colored rugs, and functional furniture. Long are the days of the dorm room futon, or springy pull-out couch. Functional furniture is all the rage in small apartments in lieu of a guest room. Some simply fold the back down into a bed, and from first glance looks nothing like a “pull-out” couch.
Unless you’re a pro at interior design, chances are you may be overwhelmed with where to start with your apartment design. You want it to look nice and cohesive and showcase who you are and what your style is. That can be really hard depending on the space., but luckily we’re here to help. We’ve come with a few tips from the pros on designing your apartment so that it looks bigger, meshes well with different decor, and makes your small space feel like a full home.
Even if you have a small space, you can give the illusion that it’s much larger by doing a few key things.
Take advantage of the vertical space on your walls. What we mean is to install longer ladder shelving that elongates the space and draws the eye upward, giving the illusion that the room has a lot more space. You can also install large tapestries or large canvas art that showcases the entire wall and makes it look larger. You could also hang some hooks for hanging plants with vines that draw the eye upwards and give your apartment a sort of canopy look.
Putting a bulky couch or chair on the floor only makes it look clunky and draws the eye downward. Purchase furniture that has legs that lift the piece off the floor. Or, install wooden legs onto your existing furniture (or even prop up with hidden pallets or cinder blocks). That little lift creates just enough space underneath to make the room feel more opened up—plus, it’s easier to clean the floors.
Yes, clear furniture is a thing. Clear plexiglass or glass coffee tables and end tables have become all the rage in newer designed apartments. They allow for a functional space and table to use but remain virtually undetectable in your space, making it seem larger once again. For example, a clear coffee table won’t hide your beautiful area rug or sofa and gives the illusion that the room is just open, but you actually have useful pieces throughout the room. On the other hand, a heavy wooden table can really close up an area.
A lack of square footage shouldn’t mean a lack of apartment interior design. There are many ways you can fully utilize your space, small or large, using the floor space you do have and making tiny adjustments to utilize every inch of space.
If you have a studio or loft-style apartment, dividing the rooms into sections can make it easier to design them. For example, if your living room and dining room are one great room, use your sofa as a room divider, you can section off the dining area on its own. Sofa tables can sit behind your divider sofa to help break it up even more, and add a nice design element to place books or other decor.
If you don’t have a ton of floor space for dressers or tables, utilize the wall space with shelving units for storage and decor. Shelves can come in handy in your bedroom, even to place hats, jewelry, books, electronics, etc.
Rugs can also help section off your individual spaces into their own “rooms”. Even if your apartment has carpeted floors, a rug can still work and gives your living room a focal point to place your furniture and coffee table. Irregular-shaped rugs like faux skins or fur can also give even the smallest space a cool design element that draws the eye and brings bright features to the space.
